Phnom Penh:The Organisation for Building Community Resources (OBCR) Cambodia is
inviting Bruneians to volunteer to teach English to Cambodian children,
Borneo Bulletin reported.
The OBCR is a NGO based in Samrong Tong
district in Cambodia that focuses on capacity building and empowerment
for rural communities.
The organisation implements rural Community
development programmes for the poor at provincial, district and commune
levels to improve the social-economic condition of Cambodians.
They
have been running the English Training Project Centre for Children
(ETPC) in Samrong Tong district for children in the villages, and the
centre focuses on building English language capability to create an
opportunity for Cambodian children to widen their knowledge. There are
currently over 127 children enrolled within OBCR.
Founded in 2005
by a group of seven Cambodians, OBCR was officially recognised as an NGO
by the Ministry of Interior of Cambodia in April 2006.
The
programme requires volunteers to teach English at ETPC for a period of
two weeks. The objective is to enable volunteers to gain exposure to
overseas community work and contribute to ETPS’s and OBCR’s
sustainability and progress.
To qualify, volunteers must have
enthusiasm, love for children and good communication skills in the
English language, be open to adventure therefore being able to adapt to a
somewhat challenging environment and be able to bear all expenses,
including air fare.
“This is a great opportunity for young people
above 18 years old to be exposed to community work that is valuable for
their personal development,” said Fatin Arifin, Director of Sponsorship
and Public Relations of OBCR.
“Life in rural Cambodia is a stark
contrast to ours in Brunei therefore, the programme will be an enriching
experience and you may just come back with a different perspective
about life,” she added.
The volunteers are expected to teach the
classes from Monday to Friday 1pm to 6pm and the curriculum covers
reading, spelling, singing, storytelling, drawing, writing and grammar
lessons.
OBCR will facilitate arrangements on the ground such as
transport and accommodation, and provide advice on places to visit or
where to eat. Application is subject to approval and applicants will be
contacted for an interview.
This volunteering programme is introduced following Fatin’s personal experiences teaching at ETPC.
In
January 2013, three volunteers (Huwaida Ishaaq, Ong Yin and Munira
Syaza Arifin) from Brunei joined the ETPC Teaching Volunteering Pilot
for ten days.
